Florida educators say pandemic “is not over and it’s not going anywhere in the near future”

CBS News is chronicling what has changed in the lives of residents of some of the biggest battleground states in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s been six weeks since Rocky Hannah, Leon County Schools superintendent in North Florida, reopened schools after abruptly closing in the spring due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The county allowed children to return to schools on August 31 in order to avoid potential financial penalties from Florida for not offering in-person options. Forty-four percent came back to in-person classrooms while 55% opted to start the school year remotely.

“There were a lot of our parents that needed to get back to work, that needed their children in school, and by us giving families those options, I think we absolutely did the right thing,” said Hannah.

When CBS News spoke with Hannah in July, the county had made an $11 million investment to purchase 32,500 laptops

Bacterial toxin with healing effect — ScienceDaily

A bacterial toxin promoting tissue healing has been discovered. The compound, found in Staphylococcus aureus, does not just damage cells, but also stimulates tissue regeneration.

Normally they are among the many harmless organisms found in and on the human body: one in four people have millions of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on their skin and on the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, without being aware of it. In some cases, however, the harmless bacteria can turn into pathogens, which can lead to skin inflammation and lung infections, or — in the worst cases — sepsis. “This happens especially when the bacteria multiply too fast, for example when a person’s immune system is weakened by an infection or injury,” says Prof. Oliver Werz of Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany.

The Professor for Pharmaceutical Chemistry and his team have studied the molecular defence mechanisms of the human immune system in

This story is part of Apple Event, our full coverage of the latest news from Apple headquarters.

During a virtual event Tuesday, Apple announced its lineup of iPhone 12 phones after a month-long postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic. There are four new devices altogether: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. With the various memory configurations, the phones range from $729 (£699, AU$1,199) to as much as $1,399 (£1,399, AU$2,369) off-contract, but all models have 5G connectivity, the A14 Bionic chip and multiple rear cameras.

Because of these latest devices, Apple reduced the prices of its older iPhone models that it still sells new. This includes the iPhone 11 from last year and the iPhone XR from 2018. The iPhone SE, which the company

New iPhones Won’t Come With Headphones Or A Charging Box Anymore

Topline

Apple will no longer include a complimentary pair of wired headphones or a power adapter with new iPhones, the company announced Tuesday as it unveiled the iPhone 12, in an effort to cut down on packaging and reduce emissions.

Key Facts

The iPhone 12 will only come with a USB-C to Lightning cable for charging.

You’ll have to buy a $19 USB-C charging brick separately if you want to use the cable in the box, though you can still charge your phone with any old iPhone charger with a Lightning connector.

Earpods will cost another $19 if you don’t already have a pair or use wireless Airpods.

Apple says the move is part of the company’s effort to become 100% carbon neutral by 2030.

Removing accessories, Apple says, will use fewer raw materials and thinner packaging, which allows Apple to put 70% more units on a single shipping pallet

HomePod Mini Supports Low-Power Thread Networking Technology

As disclosed on the specs page for Apple’s new HomePod mini, the diminutive speaker is Apple’s first to support Thread networking technology.

Thread is a low-power IP-based networking technology for connecting Internet of Things (IoT) devices, offering a secure, mesh-based system that makes it easy to build an ecosystem of devices.

While Thread is essentially agnostic to the application layers that run on top of it, it can support multiple layers and may play a role in Project Connected Home over IP, the alliance of Apple, Amazon, Google, and other companies that is seeking to make it simpler to build devices compatible with multiple ecosystems such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant.

For the time being, however, Apple says in a footnote that ‌HomePod‌ mini’s Thread support is limited to HomeKit devices, so the technology can’t yet be leveraged cross-platform and it remains to be seen how Apple will embrace

Loop Industries Drops – Hindenburg Makes Claims, Shorts Stock

Shares of Loop Industries  (LOOP) – Get Report lost a third of their market value on Tuesday after the activist investment group Hindenburg published a report lambasting the plastics-recycling company and said it took a short position.

The investment firm said it interviewed former employees, competitors, industry experts and company partners as part of its investigation and concluded that Loop is “smoke and mirrors with no viable technology.”

Loop, Terrebonne, Quebec, didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Former employees told Hindenburg that Loop operated two labs, one reserved for its “two twenty-something lead scientist brothers and their father” and one run by rank-and-file scientists who were unable to replicate results.

The investment firm said that a Loop employee told Hindenburg that scientists were pressured by Chief Executive Daniel Solomita to “lie about the results of the company’s process internally. We have obtained internal documents and photographs to
