The OnePlus 8T comes with a slew of great features including 5G, superfast charging and a lovely display. But it’s the cameras on the back that I’m most interested in, so I was excited to get the phone in my hand and take it on a walk through the orange leaves of Edinburgh in the fall.

The 8T has four cameras: a 48-megapixel main camera, a 16-megapixel super wide angle, a 5-megapixel macro camera for close up shots, and an additional monochrome sensor for black and white photos. TL;DR: It can take great shots with the main and wide camera modes, but the black and white sensor is pointless and macro images don’t look good. Read on for more information and to see my test images.

New Tech Expands Distributed Generation’s Role in Greening the Grid (Part 2)

In Part 1, we looked at how industrial-scale distributed generating plants (typically hundreds of kilowatts to tens of megawatts), powered by renewable energy, are playing an important role in creating a new generation of more resilient, more sustainable power grids. We also saw that, regardless whether they make power from the sun’s distant rays or a nearby city’s sewage sludge, they’re still subject to the same technical requirements for regulating, conditioning, and distributing their output through the power grid as their larger fossil-fueled counterparts.

Here, we’ll take a closer look at how the equipment used in distributed generation systems must evolve to meet the industry’s changing requirements. While still undergoing some growing pains, distributed generation technologies are technically mature and well-defined enough whereby major utility operators, such as the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) and CPS Energy, have developed extensive standards that define

Relationship value and economic value are evaluated by the same part of the brain — ScienceDaily

Wishing a friend happy birthday or spending a long period of time listening to their problems signifies commitment to the friendship. In other words, these actions serve as commitment signals (*1) and it is known that people value their relationships more with others who behave this way towards them.

Researchers from several Japanese universities have revealed that the orbitofrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for calculating economic value, is also responsible for judging the value of relationships with friends based on the received commitment signals.

The research group consisted of Professor OHTSUBO Yohsuke (Graduate School of Humanities, Kobe University), Professor OHIRA Hideki (Graduate School of Informatics, Nagoya University), Aichi Medical University’s Lecturer MATSUNAGA Masahiro (and the Department of Health and Psychosocial Medicine research team), and Lecturer HIMICHI Toshiyuki (Kochi University of Technology).

These findings were published in the online edition of ‘Social Neuroscience’ on September 25.

Employees To Get Permanent Work From Home Through Summer 2021

KEY POINTS

  • 90% employees don’t want to a rigid office schedule: Dropbox’s internal survey
  • Employees can make their own schedules in the new ‘virtual first’ policy
  • Dropbox will set up collaboration spaces called ‘Dropbox Studios’

Cloud services company Dropbox is allowing its employees to work from home permanently, as part of its new ‘virtual first’ approach, it announced Tuesday in a blog post.

All employees of Dropbox have been working from home since March when the pandemic triggered lockdowns. This mandatory work-from-home policy has now been extended until June 2021. The change comes after an internal survey by the company suggested that nearly 90% of employees feel productive at home and don’t want to return to a rigid five-day in-office workweek.

Dropbox is the latest to join technology companies including Microsoft, Twitter, Slack, and Facebook to announce permanent work-from-home policies.

“Remote work will be the primary experience for all employees

The WeWork Guy’s Guide to Striking It Rich

background pattern

© Erik Carter

HBO’s Silicon Valley aired its final episode last year, the tech world’s realities having gotten too dystopian to be fictionalized, in good conscience, for laughs. When a reporter asked what material the show had left on the table, the showrunners, Mike Judge and Alec Berg, admitted, “We missed the WeWork guy.” That guy—WeWork’s telegenic co-founder and former CEO, Adam Neumann—had once been known for turning an upscale co-working business into America’s most valuable private start-up, peddling vague kumbayas like This decade is the decade of “We.” But then WeWork filed paperwork to go public, revealing that the company had lost billions of dollars while enriching Neumann.

Among other extraordinary disclosures, it turned out that he had bought we-related trademarks, then charged WeWork $5.9 million to buy them. The press soon uncovered other details to fill out the portrait of a terrible little richling: Neumann’s

The Key Takeaways From Apple’s (AAPL) ‘Hi, Speed’ Event For Investors

As expected, at its “Hi, Speed” event Apple (AAPL) debuted its several new 5G iPhone models, expanded its iPhone lineup from as low as $399 to a high as $1099, and introduced a new device, the HomePod Mini. Along with the new products, CEO Tim Cook continued to reinforce the company’s commitment to privacy, calling out how the feature is intrinsic within each device. But the item that caught our attention was the special offers that were announced by mobile carriers for Apple’s new iPhone models.

Early on in the event, Hans Vestberg, Chairman and CEO of Verizon (VZ) appeared to discuss his company’s 5G nationwide network and 5G Ultra-Wideband offering, including a focus on network capacity in stadiums, airports, and music venues – if anyone can remember what those are. Investors were apparently impressed by what Vestberg had to say as his company’s share price, having dropped over

The Amazing Secret To Cutting 25% Of Carbon Could Be Under Your Feet

The world is facing a climate crisis, spurred on by record-breaking levels of atmospheric CO2 generated by the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of natural ecosystems.

But what if one of the best weapons in our fight against global carbon emissions lies right beneath our feet? That’s the claim of a new generation of biotech firms, who say they can turn the world’s soil into a vast carbon sink, absorbing up to a quarter of annual emissions.

One such company, Soil Carbon Co., based in Australia’s New South Wales, claims that by tailoring communities of microbes that live within farm soil, humans can potentially turn back the clock on human emissions while producing better crops.

“We develop microbiological seed treatments comprised of microbial fungi and bacteria designed to provide plant benefits,” explains Guy

This gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 1660 is on sale for $550

Budget management is the ultimate buzzkill when shopping for a new PC, though timing is everything, and there are still Prime Day deals to be had. Right now, for example, you can grab what is normally a $900 configuration with a 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and GeForce GTX 1660 GPU for only $549.99. Compared to building your own, the CPU and GPU alone would cost a little over $400.

Granted, this is not a decked out gaming PC, but it is reasonably priced for the hardware. Other components include 8GB of DDR4-3000 memory, a 512GB solid state drive, a 500W power supply, and Windows 10 Home. It also comes with a keyboard and mouse (they’re probably pretty basic, but hey, you could set them aside as backups if nothing else).

I’m not too put off by the RAM, since prices have fallen over the past year. An 8GB module
