Apple this week gave users plenty of reasons to want a new iPhone 12, much as it does every year. The camera is better, and so’s the processor. The display, with its “ceramic shield” technology, is more durable, and there’s even a Pacific blue iPhone 12 Pro. There are now four new models to choose from instead of three, and the overall phone’s been redesigned for the first time since 2017. Oh, and did you hear? All phones in the iPhone 12 lineup also come with 5G.

The next-generation cellular technology was front and center in Apple’s virtual iPhone launch on Tuesday. Apple showed us its secret, padded anechoic chamber where

Apple’s iPhones just got a lot faster. During its virtual event Tuesday, the company unveiled its iPhone 12 lineup — and all four new devices come with 5G, including the ultra-fast millimeter wave version. The company’s 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Max pack in some of the biggest advances Apple has made in years.

The two middle phones go on sale next week (preorders begin this Friday), while the Mini and Max arrive in mid-November. The starting prices range from $699 for the Mini — making it one of the cheapest premium 5G phones on the

Another year, another iPhone. (Did I say that last year?) This is the iPhone’s last year of tweendom before it hits teenhood: Apple announced its four-model iPhone 12 line on Tuesday, the first major revamp of the iPhone’s design since 2017’s iPhone X, which introduced face unlocking and better screen technology. This year they sport an array of colors, more models and 5G wireless support across the lineup. In addition to the HomePod Mini smart speaker, we were treated to the MagSafe wireless charging system for the iPhone and a stealth release of the $50 Beats Flex wireless headphones.

Here’s how you order iPhone 12, Mini, Pro and Pro Max models, on different days and at different prices.

The Technology 202: Apple and Verizon say 5G is here. That’s not exactly true yet.

“5G just got real,” Verizon chief executive Hans Vestberg said onstage, as he touted his company’s plans to double its availability in some cities and roll out to 60 new markets by the end of 2020.

But in reality, 5G remains a work in progress throughout the United States.

Access to 5G networks is limited to a handful of U.S. cities, and in some instances, it’s currently slower than 4G speeds, my colleague Geoffrey Fowler has found through tests with multiple phones. And my colleagues note that the fastest early deployments have been concentrated in areas most Americans aren’t visiting very much since the pandemic began such as stadiums.

“It will likely be a few more years before we see what kind of revolution 5G will bring about in the tech world,” Stan Adams, the deputy general counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said in an email.

Apple’s Intercom Feature Works on iPhone, iPad, HomePod, Apple Watch, AirPods, and CarPlay

During the unveiling of HomePod mini at Tuesday’s Apple event, Apple introduced an upcoming new feature called Intercom that works across all Apple devices with the exception, it would seem, of Mac.

Intercom will enable family members to communicate with each other wherever they are in the home, with the ability to send and receive spoken messages via HomePod speakers. If a family member is in the garden or away from home, they can still use Intercom on their iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and even CarPlay. Apple explains:

A new Intercom feature offers a quick and easy way for family members to connect with each other at home. One person can send an Intercom message from one ‌HomePod‌ to another — whether in a different room, a specific zone, or multiple rooms throughout the home — and their voice will automatically play on the designated ‌HomePod‌ speaker. Intercom works with

Not Excited About The New iPhone 12? Apple Is Prepared.

Apple brought all its usual glamour to the unveiling of its latest iPhones 12 yesterday. There was breathless exclamation over the new colors. There were speeches about chip speed. Then there’s the less breakable ceramic cover. And don’t think a LiDAR is only for those self-driving cars made by Waymo. The new Pro line of iPhones also have it now. The LiDAR will boost augmented reality (AR).

The real punch was the new 5G wireless speeds and here is where the problem lies. For the first time, Apple and iPhone are ahead of the foundational technology.

Steve Jobs warned against the danger of being too early. “Things happen fairly slowly, you know. They

And the iPhone 12 Pro Max gets a larger sensor for better low-light performance on the main camera, a telephoto camera that zooms in better on distant subjects, better stabilization to counteract your shaky hands.

Apple issues third iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1 developer betas

Apple is on a brand new round of developer betas, with the third batch available to download for iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1, and tvOS 14.2.

The newest builds can be downloaded via the Apple Developer Center for those enrolled into the test program, or via an over-the-air update on devices running the beta software. Public betas typically arrive within a few days of the developer versions, via the Apple Beta Software Program website.

The latest batch of betas replace the second round, issued on September 29, and the first on September 17, one day after Apple released the milestone versions of each operating system.

Continuing to be the outlier of the group, macOS Big Sur has yet to see a release of its milestone version, and has previously undertaken nine beta releases. The ninth build appeared on September 29, while the eighth was on September 22.
