Canon PowerShot ZOOM adds a monocular telephoto camera to the portfolio

It might not be an opportune time to be out and about but Canon thinks people will, at one point in time, want to escape the monotony of the new normal and go outdoors. Some might even take to nature and to the night skies for a bit of reprieve. Those are pretty much the situations where Canon’s newest PowerShot ZOOM camera might be of use, helping people get close to the action even while staying far, far away.

Canon’s PowerShot line is designed for ease of use and you probably can’t get any simpler than this. Coming in a form reminiscent of camcorders, the PowerShot ZOOM is a compact monocular camera that does just one thing and that is to take you closer to your subject matter as quickly and as easily as possible.

To that end, the PowerShot ZOOM offers three telephoto lengths of 100mm, 400mm, and 800mm,

TCL Tab 8

You might recognize the TCL brand from its value-priced Roku TVs sold through Amazon, Best Buy and the like, but it’s been a player in the mobile space through its manufacturing of phones for the likes of Alcatel and BlackBerry. In 2020, the Chinese company has moved to release Android phones under its own moniker, which have been well-reviewed by ZDNet’s own reviewers (here and here). Next up: launching into the tablet market through a partnership with Verizon.

Whereas it’s selling its TCL 10 Pro and 10L smartphones unlocked in the U.S., it’s taking a different approach with its Tab 8 tablet by hooking up with a wireless carrier. At $199.99, or $8.33 per month for 24 months, the 8-inch slate is Verizon’s cheapest tablet offering, about three dollars per month cheaper than an 8.4-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Though the Galaxy Tab has a slightly bigger screen

IRS Adds QR Codes To Tax Bills

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is adding barcode technology to its tax notices.

Starting this month, the IRS will add QR codes to certain tax notices. QR stands for quick response, since the code can convey a lot of information to your smartphone in a short period of time. It’s similar to a barcode but can transfer more information, including internet addresses.

QR codes are a combination of pixels. Each piece of the code conveys specific information – the combination can generate a lot of information. To read the information, you scan the QR Code with a smartphone.

The IRS is using the technology to allow taxpayers to scan codes on two particular notices, the CP14 or CP14 IA, with their smartphone and go directly to IRS.gov. From there, taxpayers can securely access their account, set up a payment plan or contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service.

Twitter Adds Major Changes Ahead of 2020 Election Day

Twitter on Friday announced changes that it hopes will limit the spread of disinformation surrounding the 2020 election, even if the bullshit is coming from inside the White House.

The tweaks are among the most aggressive by a major social media platform to muffle election-related misinformation to date. But with the future of American democracy hanging on a Donald Trump tweetstorm and mere weeks until Election Day, we’re all just going to have to cross our fingers that this does anything at all.

The first change to Twitter’s platform includes adding warning “prompts” to tweets with “misleading information” when users try to retweet them; users will also be encouraged to quote tweet—i.e., add their own commentary to a “disputed” tweet—rather than simply retweet the misleading information without additional context. Twitter won’t stop you from simply retweeting misinformation, but it hopes

EMERGING MARKETS-Thailand gains after govt adds tax deduction to stimulus push

By Shruti Sonal

Oct 8 (Reuters)Thai stocks climbed nearly 1% on Thursday as the government took measures to boost consumption in its coronavirus-battered economy, leading gains across a handful of Asia’s big emerging markets.

With markets globally eyeing a tumultuous U.S. election campaign and roadblocks in passing stimulus in the world’s biggest economy, currencies across the region were subdued, with the Taiwan dollar again the main standout, rising almost 1%.

Thailand’s benchmark index .SETI hit its highest in over two weeks after officials added a tax deduction on purchases of goods and services to cash handouts and subsidies announced last month.

Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow said altogether the measures would push about 200 billion baht ($6.4 billion) into the economy in the last three months of this year.

The tourist-heavy economy has started receiving its first visitors this week after months of travel curbs and its

Spotify Adds Ability to Search Songs by Lyrics

Illustration for article titled Spotify Adds Ability to Search Songs by Lyrics and Launches New App

Photo: Martin Bureau (Getty Images)

This week, Spotify is rolling out the ability to find songs by searching for their lyrics. It’s a feature that’s been a long time coming and it will undoubtedly become second-nature for users in no time at all.

Spotify designer Lin Wang first shared the news in a tweet on Monday. The new search function is available on iOS or Android and our initial tests show that it works as advertised. We tried a few examples of English, Spanish, and Hindi lyrics and found the correct song with just a few words. That probably won’t prove to be the case for more obscure songs, but rest assured that Smash Mouth’s All Star is readily searchable.

It’s unclear which service is providing the lyrics transcription for Spotify’s search and the company didn’t say when it responded to our request for comment. Back
