Black hole kills star by ‘spaghettification’ as telescopes watch

Telescopes have captured the rare light flash from a dying star as it was ripped apart by a supermassive black hole

This rarely seen “tidal disruption event” — which creates spaghettification in stars as they stretch and stretch – is the closest such known event to happen, at only 215 million light-years from Earth. (For comparison, the nearest star system to Earth – Alpha Centauri — is roughly 4 light-years away, and the Milky Way is roughly 200,000 light years in diameter.) One light-year is the distance light travels in a year, about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kilometers).

“The idea of a black hole ‘sucking in’ a nearby star sounds like science fiction. But this is exactly what happens in a tidal disruption event,” the new study’s lead author Matt Nicholl, a lecturer and Royal Astronomical Society research fellow at the University of Birmingham in the United

Facebook is a social network monopoly that buys, copies or kills competitors, antitrust committee finds

  • The House Antitrust Subcommittee determined Facebook wields monopoly powers in social network and has maintained its position by acquiring, copying or killing its competitors, according to a report released by the subcommittee on Tuesday.
  • The report describes an exchange in which Mark Zuckerberg suggested to Instagram Co-founder Kevin Systrom that “refusing to enter into a partnership with Facebook, including an acquisition, would have consequences for Instagram.”
  • The report recommends that Congress review a series of potential remedies. This includes “structural separation,” which could “require divestiture and separate ownership of each business.”

Android 11 officially kills Daydream and the dream of smartphone VR

It was, like Thanos, inevitable but some might still get some feels with the revelation that Daydream VR is truly no more. At least not as far as Google is concerned. The writing on the wall has been there since last year so it was really only a matter of time before Android officially dropped support for Google’s remaining VR platform and with it goes the last remaining bastion of smartphone-powered VR headsets.

It may have sounded ingenious back then, especially when all you practically needed was some cardboard and specialized lenses. At least that was the appeal of Google Cardboard, what would eventually grow up to be Daydream, and it gave birth to a market of phone-powered VR headsets, many of them cheap and still available in markets.

Daydream, unfortunately, never reached its full potential, partly due to technical limitations and partly from lack of industry push and guidance.
