After dominating the foldable smartphone landscape, what’s next for Samsung? Over the years, there have been many indications that suggest phones with rollable or sliding displays might be next. Samsung has showcased some of these display technologies as well.

How long we’re made to wait for these devices remains a mystery for now. In the meantime, we can look for clues in Samsung’s regulatory filings to get a sense of what these devices may look like. This concept envisions that for Samsung’s smartphone with a rollable display.

Rollable display smartphones are the next frontier for Samsung

We have created this concept in collaboration with Jermaine Smit, a highly regarded concept creator. You can check out his YouTube channel for more cool stuff. This concept is based on a Samsung patent application that the company filed in 2020. The patent was ultimately published in May 2022. Samsung already has dozens of similar patents.

The concept highlights how the rollable display would be able to extend itself to essentially cover the entire back panel, increasing the screen real estate. Think of it as Samsung’s “edge” displays on steriods. The overall device footprint will remain smaller compared to a foldable while providing a larger screen size.

It’s pertinent to note that Samsung files thousands of patents every year for ideas that may seem even more outrageous than this. They don’t necessarily end up being released as commercial products. So it’s entirely possible that we may never see a device like this from Samsung.

However, phones with rollable and sliding displays seem to be the next frontier after foldables. Samsung Display is actively working on this technology for many years. Samsung might just end up surprising us in the long run. With the success it has had with foldables, repeating it with a new concept will be a challenge that engineers at Samsung relish.
